Stephanie Lanter sculptures on display in Mills Gallery

February 7, 2012

Please Hold,” an exhibit by artist Stephanie Lanter, will be featured in the Central College Mills Gallery Feb. 16-March 9. Lanter’s clay, fiber and mixed-media sculptures use the telephone as a theme to explore the ways people relate to and cope with themselves and others.

Lanter described her exhibit as embodying “psychological themes of dysfunction, loneliness, obsession, absurdity, ambivalence and interpersonal connection.” She explained that it is intended to investigate personal interactions.

“These works show a wonderful quirky sense of humor, which is what attracted me to them in the first place,” said Treva Reimer, Mills Gallery director. “They are also very well crafted and express multiple layers of meaning.”

A widely-published author as well as an artist, Lanter has contributed articles to publications such as “Ceramics Monthly” and “Ceramics: Art and Perception.”

Lanter will host an artist talk and reception Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. in the Mills Gallery.

Lanter received her M.F.A. from Ohio University in 2002 and her B.A. from Xavier University in 1998. She is currently a full-time ceramics instructor at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. Her work has been showcased throughout the country and has received several recognitions. In 2010 she was awarded the Kansas Arts Commission Artists Collaboration Grant, and in 2008 she won the Governor’s Award at the Sheltered Living Festival of Trees benefit.

The exhibit and artist talk are free and open to the public. Mills Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, contact Reimer at 641-628-5334 or reimert@central.edu.
