Sigma Phi Omega hosts blood drive

November 17, 2011

Central College sorority Sigma Phi Omega will host one of its biannual blood drives for Central students, employees and local community members Nov. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Graham Banquet Hall.

Sigma Phi Omega, currently boasting 15 active members, hosts a similar drive each semester. Founded in 1969, the sorority is Central’s oldest and has been sponsoring blood drives since the early 1970s.

“Our sorority is very committed to helping people,” said Sigma Phi Omega service chairperson Jessica Chaney. “Blood drives help to save lives and are a great way to get the entire community involved.”

Life Serve Blood Center will oversee blood donations.

The Sigmas are involved with several service engagements. They participate in Relay for Life and raise money for local charities by hosting biannual penny drives and volunteering during Pella’s annual Tulip Time festival. The sorority also hosts several formal social functions annually.

For more information, contact Chaney at 515-418-6822 or chaneyj1@central.edu. Walk-in donation times are available for the public from 9:30-11 a.m., with student donations to follow. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments by signing up at Central Market Nov. 16-17 or by contacting Chaney.
