A display from performance/sculptural artist Sha Sha Higby will be featured at the Central College Mills Gallery Sept. 28 to Oct. 28. The display will include costumes, masks and sculptures inspired by the artist’s dance performances.
Higby approaches dance through the medium of sculpture. A dancer who is also a three-dimensional artist, she creates the elaborate, other-worldly costumes worn during her performances. The featured sculptures are influenced by movement, as the works aim to blend the disciplines of sculpture and dance.
Sha Sha Higby developed her unique art form after extensive study throughout Asia. After spending a year in Japan, she was influenced by Japanese Noh theater. Upon returning, her art became more theatrical, and she began to perform with the increasingly dramatic sculptures.
Higby will be on campus Oct. 25-27 as the Allison B. Allen artist in residence. She will host workshops and visit classes. On Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., Higby will host a performance titled “Folds of Gold” in the Mills Gallery. The artist will hold a reception following the performance.
