Renowned educators Harry and Rosemary Wong speak at Central

February 3, 2012

Classroom management and student achievement experts Drs. Harry and Rosemary Wong will lead an education workshop at Central College Feb. 15 from 1-4 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium.

The duo will deliver a presentation titled “How to be a Successful and Effective Teacher,” which highlights the Wongs’ acclaimed theories on classroom management and student success. The event is designed for anyone interested in classroom teaching. K-12 teachers from across Iowa are scheduled to attend.

Harry and Rosemary Wong are a highly sought-after speaking duo, having delivered over 3,500 presentations on education across the globe. The workshop is made possible by the generosity of the Geisler Penquite Foundation through the Geisler Penquite Education Excellence Fund.

“This is a tremendous opportunity not only for our pre-service education students, but for others across the state,” said Jennifer Diers, assistant professor of education. “There has been tremendous buzz about the Wongs’ visit, and we anticipate a great turnout! We are extremely grateful to the Geisler Penquite Foundation for allowing us to host such a great event here at Central.”

Harry is a former middle school and high school science teacher from California. While teaching, he developed methods that eliminated discipline problems in his classroom, created a zero dropout rate and spurred a 95 percent homework completion rate. His research-based techniques for promoting high-level student success in the classroom are designed to use common sense and have no cost.

In 2009, he was presented with the Horace Mann League’s Outstanding Public Educator Award. He has also earned the Valley Forge Teacher’s Medal and the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award, among others.

Rosemary is a former elementary school teacher who taught in Louisiana and California. She has helped develop classroom management techniques alongside Harry since 1976 and regularly authors articles on the subject. Her writing was recognized with an Upton Sinclair award, and she has also been honored with the Silicon Valley Distinguished Woman’s Award and the Silicon Valley Woman of Influence Award.

“The First Days of School,” the Wongs’ book on effective teaching, is the highest-selling book ever in education, with more than 3.6 million copies sold worldwide.

The event is free and open to the public, with no registration or tickets required. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis with doors opening at 12:15 p.m. Overflow seating will be available in Graham Conference Center.

A limited quantity of the Wongs’ book will be available for purchase by cash or check during the event.
