Anne Petrie, vocalist and professor of music, will present a faculty recital Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. in the Cox-Snow Recital Hall. A soprano, Petrie will perform a selection of songs spanning four languages and various influences.
The main feature of the performance will be Ned Rorem’s “Poems of Love and the Rain,” consisting of 17 settings of works by American writers. The program also features seven foreign-language compositions — two in Italian, three in French and two in Russian. These include Claude Debussy’s “En Sourdine” and Mikhail Glinka’s “Barcarolle.” Petrie will then pay tribute to American music-theatre singer Barbara Cook with two songs associated with the performer.
Paul Kovacovic, assistant professor of music, will provide piano accompaniment, and cellist Joel Williams will be featured as a special guest.
Petrie is in her 26th year at Central and teaches courses in the fundamentals of music and voice as well as private vocal lessons for beginner and advanced students. She has hosted a faculty recital every year since she joined the music department in 1986.
“Performing a recital each year is important to me for many reasons,” said Petrie. “It pushes me to keep learning new music; it enables me to model for my students the interpretive qualities I’m nudging them to acquire; and I hope it offers something enjoyable to the larger community.”
In addition to her annual recital, Petrie regularly performs with renowned organist Bob Ralston at Pella’s Tulip Time festival. Ralston is the former organist and arranger for ABC’s long-running “The Lawrence Welk Show.”
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Petrie at 641-628-5103 or petriea@central.edu.
