Central College welcomes storyteller, actor, playwright, author and essayist Kevin Kling as the featured author in the Writers Reading series Feb. 20 and in his one-man show “Breakin’ Hearts & Takin’ Names” Feb. 22.
Kling’s plays and adaptations have been performed around the world. Best known for his commentaries on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” Kling shares autobiographical tales.
He is also known for his books of essays and children’s stories. Over his career, Kling has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, The McKnight Foundation and The Minnesota State Arts Board.
Kling will also be spending a week in residence with the Central theatre department. He will teach a storytelling workshop, visit with children Feb. 17 at the Pella Public Library and visit Central classes.
“Kevin’s visit is such a fantastic opportunity for Central and the community,” said Ann Wilkinson, instructor of theatre. “He has a wonderful worldwide reputation in the arts.”
Kling’s visit is made possible by the Marion County Community Foundation, Union Street Players, Writers Reading, Campus Life Committee, Pella Shakespeare Company, the Central College Fishing Club, Intercultural Life, the Pella Public Library and the Central College theatre department. His residency precedes the theatre department’s production of one of Kling’s works, “The Ice Fishing Play,” which will run Feb. 26-March 1.
Kling’s reading is at 7:30 p.m. in the Cox-Snow Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. His presentation of “Breakin’ Hearts & Takin’ Names” starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Kruidenier Center.
Tickets for his performance of “Breakin’ Hearts & Takin’ Names” are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children and free with a Central ID. Tickets may be purchased at the Info booth in the Maytag Center or by calling 641-628-9000.
