Central College will host a juried show of student artwork in the Mills Gallery Jan. 18-Feb. 10, with top prizes awarded by local artist Sheryl Ellinwood.
All Central art students were invited to submit up to three works for the show. Featured artists include art majors and non-majors. The exhibit displays work created in several art courses and represents various mediums, including ceramics, painting, drawing and sculpture. Before the exhibit opens, Ellinwood will choose one piece as best of show, and two more will receive honorable mention distinctions.
“Our students do wonderful work, and the art department wanted to acknowledge this,” said Treva Reimer, Mills Gallery director. “A juried exhibit is a good way to recognize their talent, as well as give the student artists a taste of what a professional artist does.”
Ellinwood is a blown glass and sculpture artist, as well as the owner and operator of Ellinwood Studios in Knoxville. She holds graduate degrees in both glass and sculpture. Her work has been featured in galleries across the country, and she has won numerous awards, including the 1991 Glass Art Society Award for Excellence.
Student artists will hold a reception in the Mills Gallery Jan. 19 at 5 p.m., during which award winners will be recognized. Receptions for prospective scholarship students will also be held in the gallery throughout the exhibit to showcase current student work.
The event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, contact Reimer at 641-628-5334 or reimert@central.edu.
