High school students visit Central during Iowa Private College Week

July 2, 2015

Iowa Private College Week (IPCW) will bring hundreds of high school students and parents to visit Central College in the first full week of August. Each day from Aug. 3-7, guests can learn about Central by attending sessions that begin at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Graham Conference Center.

While visiting Central, students will be invited to tour academic buildings, residence halls and athletic facilities. They can also meet faculty members, coaches and directors to discuss opportunities on campus, as well as internships and studying abroad.

Throughout the week, Iowa’s non-profit, private colleges and universities across the state will synchronize campus tour schedules, making it easy for students and parents to schedule up to ten campus visits in only one week. Central is one of 25 colleges and universities participating in IPCW, and hundreds of students have already registered to attend.

“Students really get bombarded with information about college choice.  Visiting campuses can help them cut through the clutter and make good decisions about the right college for them.”

Carol Williamson, vice president of enrollment at Central, said IPCW makes it easy for high school students to advance in their college search. “I believe each student and family is really looking for the best college to launch them into their successful future,” Williamson said. “Visiting during Iowa Private College Week is a perfect way to begin that search.”

Andy Baumert, vice-president for marketing and outreach at the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, said the special week is a great time for students to take important steps toward deciding which college to attend.

“Students really get bombarded with information about college choice and that can make decisions seem overwhelming for them, and for Mom and Dad too,” Baumert said. “Actually visiting the campuses, asking faculty and students about class sizes, graduation rates and financial aid can help them cut through the clutter and make good decisions about the right college for them.”

Also, Casey’s General Stores provides 5-cent per gallon fuel discount coupons at each campus to help defray travel costs. Students who visit at least three campuses and mail in an entry form are entered in a drawing for one of up to fifty $500 bookstore vouchers.

At Central, daily sessions end at noon and 4:30 p.m., when visitors are invited to enjoy a buffet lunch or ice cream sundae bar at the award-winning Central Market. All visiting students will also receive a free Central Dutch T-shirt, and Central will waive their $25 application fee.
