Geisler Penquite announces 2014 spring speakers

The Geisler Penquite committee has announced its 2014 spring speakers. The speaker series will focus on a number of topics in education. All sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is required. For more information and to register, visit: https://departments.central.edu/education. All sessions will be held in the Roe Center at Central College.

The first session is “Basic Sign Language for the Classroom” on March 1 from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Sign language interpreter Penni Bouwers will provide an interactive workshop to teach participants basic sign language and finger-spelling skills for the classroom. The workshop does not provide sign language certification but will provide participants with basic methods for working with children with communication/hearing disorders.

“Practical Strategies for Helping Grieving Students” will be held March 3 from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Teske Drake, an author in the field of grief and loss, will present practical, effective ways for handling grief in the school.

“Using TI NSpire Technology to Engage Students in Learning Math” will be held March 26 from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Mike Bevelacqua, an Iowa City public high school teacher, will conduct a workshop for incorporating TI NSpire in the middle and secondary classrooms to engage and motivate students to learn math.

“Practical Teaching Methods with English Learners” is the final session on April 15 from 10–11:30 a.m. Cindra Porter, a doctoral candidate in foreign language and ESL education at The University of Iowa, will provide a workshop teaching practical methods for reaching and engaging English learners in the classroom.
