American folk singer and songwriter Carrie Newcomer will perform a concert of her original compositions at Central College Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Cox-Snow Recital Hall.
A guitarist and vocalist, her performance will feature songs representing various influences. Newcomer has been noted for the astute observations her songs make about the world. She has released 15 albums since her 1991 debut, the most recent of which is 2011’s “Everything is Everywhere.” The album mixes American and Indian influences and was written to explore both the differences and the commonalities in the two cultures.
In addition to her songwriting, Newcomer has been recognized for her service work. “Everything is Everywhere” was released as a benefit project for the Interfaith Hunger Initiative, an Indianapolis-based organization aimed at ending world hunger. In 2009, she was selected by the United States Embassy in India to serve as a cultural ambassador to that country, where she held workshops and performed for locals.
In addition to her concert, Newcomer will deliver the keynote address at a convocation titled “A Conversation with Carrie Newcomer,” Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. in Douwstra Auditorium. The convocation is held in conjunction with Intersections, Central’s required first-year course.
Newcomer will be in residence at Central Nov. 14-18 to work with students in classes and workshops.
This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Iowa Arts Council, General Mills Foundation and Land O’Lakes Foundation.
The concert and convocation are free and open to the public. Concert tickets are available at the information booth in Maytag Student Center or by calling 641-628-9000.
