October 21-24 is Fair Trade Week in Pella, with events planned Tuesday through Thursday to highlight fair trade and social sustainability in a globalized economy. Central College and local nonprofit The Work of Our Hands will host Anak Norm of Cambodia, a guest speaker who manages a large fair-trade organization in Cambodia.
One of the main events will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 22, when a panel of speakers will discuss fair trade and social sustainability in Maytag Student Center’s van Emmerik Studio. On the panel, Norm will be joined by international fair-trade professional Kerry Evans, professor of political science Jim Zaffiro and The Work of Our Hands manager Cheryl Newendorp.
On Oct. 23, a four-course Cambodian dinner and wine pairing will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Graham Conference Center, where Norm will also present on fair trade issues. Guests must R.S.V.P. to Central Dining Services at 641-628-5201. The cost is $30 per adult, $25 for Central students over age 21 with a meal plan, and $10 for students under 21 with a meal plan.
In the Maytag Student Center Atrium, The Work of Our Hands will also run a booth from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Oct. 21–24, where students and guests can buy crafts made by artisans in developing countries.
