In celebration of Martin Luther King Day, Chris Weaver, a 2010 Central graduate, will perform Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. in Douwstra Auditorium.
A vocalist, Weaver’s concert will feature approximately 10 songs. His set list includes mostly gospel selections, including “Precious Lord, Take my Hand,” and “People Get Ready.”
“My goal for the performance is to connect the past with the present,” said Weaver. “I want to draw a bridge between what Dr. King did through the civil rights movement and what these songs show people can do today.”
Weaver is a resident of West Des Moines, where he is a worship coordinator at Lutheran Church of Hope. He works with the church’s children’s and students’ ministries, as well as Celebrate Recovery, an addiction recovery group. He performs regularly with the worship and music ministry and is a recognized talent outside the church. He was a featured soloist for the Des Moines Symphony on Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” in 2010.
As a Central student, Weaver participated in Campus Ministries and sang with the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers and Vocal and Instrumental Combos. He graduated with a degree in general studies.
Central College hosts a speaker or performer annually in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.
“It’s a great way to remind current generations of connections to the past and how predecessors laid the groundwork for what we have today,” said Brandyn Woodard, director of intercultural life. “With Dr. King in particular, his message of peace and social justice is something that we can continue to look to.”
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Woodard at 641-628-5134 or woodardb@central.edu.
