Central’s Hike to Help Refugees postponed

October 7, 2013

Scheduling note–Due to the government shutdown and inclement weather the Hike for Refugees event has been postponed. The Central College Volunteer Center will reschedule the hike in the spring.

In 2012 there were 15.2 million refugees around the world seeking safer territory. The Central College Volunteer Center is calling attention to this crisis by partnering with the United Nations Association of Iowa to bring Hike to Help Refugees to the community.

The Hike to Help Refugees is set for Fifield Recreation Area near Lake Red Rock Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.-noon, starting with a three-mile walk and a six-mile run on the nearby Volksweg Trail.

Speakers and activities will follow, led by some Des Moines residents who came to Iowa as refugees from around the world. They’ll share their experiences and seek to raise awareness for the millions of people worldwide who are fleeing their homelands.

Participation is $5 for adults and free for students. All proceeds go to the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, specifically benefitting the millions of displaced Syrian and Sudanese refugees.
