Central remembers 9/11

September 8, 2011

September 9-13, Central College will hold a series of observances in honor of the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks. Hosted by various campus organizations, the events will memorialize the attacks and examine the impact of the tragedy and the consequences today.

The events begin Friday, Sept. 9 with the History Club hosting a “Where were you when…” display from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Held in the Maytag Student Center atrium, the exhibit will feature media clips and interactive remembrance activities related to 9/11. The display will allow guests to reflect on their own memories of the attacks.

Sunday, the anniversary of the attacks, will be the kick-off a week-long “Peace flag display at the Peace Pole.” Students, faculty and staff have decorated the peace flags that will populate the exhibit. The flags will then be displayed Sept. 11-16 at the Peace Pole on the south lawn of Geisler Library.

On Sunday evening, Campus Ministries will host an observance at the pond. Chaplain Joel Brummel will lead a candlelight remembrance. He will speak briefly on the theme “No longer strangers,” challenging participants to contemplate the ways the attacks created human connections. Time for quiet reflection will follow. The event begins at 10 p.m.

The memorial continues Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in van Emmerik Studio with “The Reel World film: American East,” sponsored by Counseling Services. The 2007 drama follows three main characters and highlights the pressures faced by Arab-Americans living in Los Angeles after 9/11. After the film, counseling services will lead a group discussion.

The final event in the series will be a panel discussion titled “Islam in America” on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Featuring Central faculty and students and Islamic community leaders from central Iowa, the discussion will explore misconceptions Iowans and other Americans have about Islam. The panel discussion is hosted by Intercultural Life and will be held at 7 p.m. in Cox-Snow Recital Hall.

All events are free and open to the public.
