Central receives president’s community service honor

June 9, 2011

PELLA — Central College was named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Established in 2006, the award is the highest federal honor a university can receive for commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

As a part of the honor roll, Central is among an elite list of schools from around the country that strongly encourage and participate in community service projects. The honorees are chosen based on the institution’s overall involvement with service-learning, service incentives, service innovation and community partners and percentage of student participation.

The award is presented by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a government corporation that encourages more than five million Americans to volunteer through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs. The agency pilots President Barack Obama’s national call to service program, United We Serve.

In 2010, 1,142 Central students engaged in academic service-learning, a 40 percent increase over the previous year. Students served 68,416 hours during the school year in both academic and non-academic contexts.
