Cynthia Doggett, associate professor of music at Central College, will perform the American premier of “Fantasia Yucateca,” a piece composed by Jorge Montilla and commissioned by Doggett with the support of the Moore Family Foundation.
Based on traditional and current Yucatan and Mayan music, “Fantasia Yucateca” will showcase different aspects of music from the Yucatan Peninsula from the last 100 years. Three songs were chosen by Montilla to represent the Yucatan’s musical progression. “Peregrina” by Ricardo Palmerin and Luis Rosado Vega, “No Se Tu” by Armando Manzanero and “Mayan Roots” by Gabriel Espinosa will be performed by Doggett and the Central College Community Orchestra under the direction of Diane Phoenix-Neal, visiting assistant professor of music.
Doggett looks forward to sharing the culture from the Yucatan Peninsula.
“I went to Merida on a faculty training workshop and fell in love with the culture and people,” she Doggett, a clarinet player. “Part of my purpose in commissioning this piece was to encourage other faculty and students to travel to the Yucatan and get to know the people, culture and music for themselves.”
The concert is Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Cox-Snow Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
