Central College plans Martin Luther King, Jr. Day program and service activities

Central College will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a special program Jan. 19 and service projects throughout the week. Monday’s panel discussion, “Social Change: A Bias toward Peaceful Action,” will be held at 11 a.m. in Douwstra Auditorium. Cynthia Mahmood, Frank Moore chair of anthropology, and Michael Harris, professor of English, will lead the panel discussion, and members of the community are invited to attend.

Additional panel members include: Lori Witt, associate professor of history, Kimberly Koza, associate professor of English, Shawn Wick, assistant professor of sociology, Rachel Pearson ‘15, senior English student from Guthrie Center, and Chris Kosmicki ’15, senior English student from Greeley, Colo.

 

Schedule (Maytag Student Center)

Jan. 19 – Students will make fleece tie blankets for the Care Bags Foundation, founded by Annie Wignall Foskett ’10, 12–3 p.m. The blankets will be delivered to displaced, abused and disadvantaged children. This project is sponsored by the Center for Community-Based Learning and Campus Ministries.

Jan. 20 – Students will turn old T-shirts into diapers for children in Haiti, 10 a.m. –2 p.m. The diapers will provide better sanitation and help prevent diseases. This project is sponsored by Campus Ministries.

At 6 p.m. Jan. 20, Central will host the Marion County 4-H Science Club. Computer science club members from Central will help local students learn about computer science. The event is sponsored by the Center for Community-Based Learning.

Jan. 21 – Students will make blankets from blue jeans to give to homeless people. The event is sponsored by Campus Ministries and Students Concerned About the Environment (SCATE).

Jan. 23 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newton will recruit mentors for an electronic pen pal program.
