Central’s Paul Weihe earns biology honor

October 21, 2011

PELLA — Central College associate professor of biology Paul Weihe was named a 2011 BEN Scholar by BiosciEdNet (BEN), a digital library portal aiming to develop digital resources for biology study.

The BEN Scholars Program is an outreach activity of the BEN Collaborative, a collection of 25 life sciences professional societies founded in 1999. The scholars program promotes the use of digital library resources and student-centered teaching at the undergraduate level. BEN selects 15 scholars annually in a competitive application process.

“I was thrilled to be selected,” said Weihe. “This is a tremendous opportunity, and I’m excited to participate.”

Scholars are selected for their commitment to improve biology education at their institution and to participate in leadership development and outreach. Applicants must submit a proposal narrative, demonstrate ability to participate in programming and describe past teaching responsibilities and outreach activities.

Weihe says he strives to make science accessible to everyone. He has been featured on local radio and led educational outings for the public. Weihe also is active researcher. He publishes articles frequently in academic journals and via digital outlets.

A Central faculty member since 1998, Weihe specializes in ecology and environmental science. He strives to make his lessons approachable to students.

“Most people have heard that big changes are underway in the landscape of education, with young people learning differently today than they did in the past,” said Weihe.

BEN Scholars learn how to use digital libraries to make lectures and laboratories more student-friendly. They also integrate career exploration and up-to-date science content into existing curricula. The program is an 18-month commitment.

During the program, Weihe will receive training from fellow scholars and peer mentors via online activities. He will work to add to the BiosciEdNet Portal’s collection as well as educate his colleagues.

The organization will host a National Leadership Training Institute Jan. 25-28 in Washington, D.C, which all scholars will attend.
