New for the 2011-12 academic year, Central presents the music series Acoustic Underground. The series will showcase performances by various singer/songwriters throughout the year. All shows will be held in the Maytag Student Center Underground.
Organized by junior Kelly Spavin in conjunction with Treva Reimer, director of cultural affairs, the series is designed to give singer-songwriters from around the Central community a chance to share their music. A performer herself, Spavin recognized the lack of performance space for artists.
“Sharing music with the people around you isn’t easy,” she said.
Acoustic Underground will feature three performances in the fall. Performers will include students, faculty members and invited artists. The venue will provide a relaxed atmosphere for stripped-down shows.
“The idea is to keep it pretty unplugged,” said Spavin.
Musicians will give intimate performances, taking time to discuss their music with audience members between songs. It will give artists the opportunity to share personal perspectives on the songs.
The series begins Sept. 14, when Spavin herself performs. On Oct. 26, Josh Dolezal of the English department will be featured. The final performance of the semester on Nov. 16 will feature guest artist Carrie Newcomer and open mic performances by Central students.
Spavin will perform an eight-song set on Wednesday. It will feature three original compositions and five covers. The set will begin at 8 p.m.
