rickbassNature writer Rick Bass will read from his short fiction April 14 at Central College. His 7:30 p.m. reading in Cox-Snow Recital Hall is free and open to the public.

For his writing, Bass has won O. Henry Awards, Pushcart Prizes, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and many other national awards. His nonfiction has been anthologized in “Best American Spiritual Writing,” “Best Spiritual Writing,” “Best American Travel Writing” and “Best American Science Writing.”

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Bass studied petroleum geology at Utah State University. He began writing short stories during lunch breaks while working as a petroleum geologist in Jackson, Mississippi. Since 1987, he has written full time from the Yaak Valley in northwestern Montana, focusing on preserving wild places and sustaining rural communities.

On April 15, Bass will spend additional time with Central students. His visit is made possible by the Office of Sustainability Education, a Margaret A. Cargill Foundation grant and the Writers Reading series.
