The Central College A Cappella Choir is performing its annual ROCK-A-PELLA concert, a fundraising variety show, on April 26.
The concert, under the direction of Associate professor of music Mark Babcock, is a one-hour program that includes auditioned music, drama and comic entertainment from members of the choir. The event concludes with music selections from the choir’s Brazilian tour to Sao Paulo, Iguacu and Rio di Janeiro May 14-25.
Audience members can vote for their favorite acts with money placed in decorated boxes in Douwstra Auditorium. All funds will be used toward the choir’s trip to Brazil.
In addition to free-will donations, the choir will be accepting new and gently used shoes for a service project. The A Cappella Choir is partnering with the Northeast Rotary Club in Sao Paulo, which has collected new and used shoes to distribute to people in need throughout Brazil for more than a decade. The club focuses on rural communities, as well as impoverished areas in Brazil’s largest cities. Through the end of 2012, there were more than 50,000 pairs of shoes collected and distributed. The choir hopes to add to the number as a goodwill gesture.
ROCK-A-PELLA is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
