Central College dedicates Helen Jean Hislop Center to honor her years of service

October 21-24 is Fair Trade Week in Pella, with events planned Tuesday through Thursday to highlight fair trade and social sustainability in a globalized economy.
World-renowned scientist Ronald Phillips will speak at 11 a.m. Oct. 15.
Central College faculty and students will come together in a different setting from the classroom at 7 p.m. Oct. 10. In Central’s Upper Chapel, college President Mark Putnam, along with several faculty colleagues, will perform in song, comedy, lip-syncing and other hidden talents.
“The Game’s Afoot” (or “Holmes for the Holidays”) will run Oct. 1-4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pella Opera House, presented by Central College’s department of theatre.
Shawn Wick, assistant professor of sociology at Central College, has been elected president of the Iowa Sociological Association (ISA) for 2014-2015. Wick was selected by other sociology professors throughout the state, and he will be responsible for hosting the organization’s annual conference.
Central College will host its first scholar-in-residence through the Thomas J. and Charlene P. Gaard Endowed Residency in the Liberal Arts Oct. 8-10
Central College will host award-winning author Chitra Divakaruni Sept. 24-26. Divakaruni’s keynote address, “My Amazing Journey,” is open to the public at 11 a.m. on Sept. 25 in Douwstra Auditorium.
Registration is now open for alumni, family and friends of Central College to attend homecoming Oct. 3-5.
Three Central College alumni—and one honorary alumna—will receive awards on Oct. 4 during Central’s homecoming. The award winners include Jeff Link ’89, Kirk Kolenbrander ’83, Markay Winston ’87 and Marlyn Rietfeld Ebbers, who will be honored for professional achievements and dedication to Central.
