After returning from a semester in Granada, Spain, Kate Huisman ’16 didn’t expect to encounter a new culture just 20 minutes away from her hometown.
Something was missing, three Central students noticed, when they read recent studies on technology and families. “We didn’t see anything about smartphones,” Raegan Zetterlund ’16 said.
Shawn Wick, assistant professor of sociology at Central College, has been elected president of the Iowa Sociological Association (ISA) for 2014-2015. Wick was selected by other sociology professors throughout the state, and he will be responsible for hosting the organization’s annual conference.

Central College will soon create a web page for every student on Merit, a media tool that publicizes student achievements. Whenever students receive recognition, Central staff will publish their stories on Merit.
Central College will host award-winning author Chitra Divakaruni Sept. 24-26. Divakaruni’s keynote address, “My Amazing Journey,” is open to the public at 11 a.m. on Sept. 25 in Douwstra Auditorium.
Eight Central students completed their spring semester with a field trip to Peru this summer.
Iowa Private College Week (IPCW) will bring hundreds of high school students and parents to visit Central College in the first full week of August.
Central College has been awarded a share of a $600,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education for the next three years. The grant will fund a collaborative project between Central College and Drake University to train high school math teachers from low-income areas.
