Percussion ensemble hosts fall concert

November 21, 2011

The Central percussion ensemble, under the direction of assistant professor of music Stan Dahl, will host its annual fall concert Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium.

The 11-member group will perform from a six-selection repertoire, including Anders Astrand’s Aurora Borealis-inspired “Norskken” and Ney Rosauro’s “Mitos Brasilerios,” a five-movement composition depicting mythological beings from Brazilian folklore. Central flute ensemble Argento Fuoco will join the percussionists on Alice Gomez’s “Streams.”

“The concert is a mixture of 20th century percussion ensemble literature, along with the fast-paced sound of African drumming,” said Dahl.

The percussion ensemble prides itself on its unexpected and varied music selection and its surprising array of instruments. Ensemble students have spent the semester studying traditional instruments of West and East Africa. “African Drum Ensemble,” the final selection of the evening, will feature the djembe, djun djun, shekere and amadinda.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Debbie Abel at 641-628-5236.

The percussion ensemble plays everything from xylophones to brake drums to pots and pans.
