The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) is urging citizens to sign a statement in support of federal student aid. The petition is sponsored by Student Aid Alliance, a coalition of 62 higher education organizations around the country.
Recent budget cuts have resulted in the loss of $30 billion from student aid programs. Particularly in danger are Pell Grants, which are awarded to the neediest students. In the 2009-10 award year, more than 8 million students received Pell Grants that helped them attend college. Nearly 80 percent of Pell Grant recipients have a family income of $40,000 or less.
The petition states: “I support protecting federal student aid. Keep college within reach for our nation’s students and families.” To sign the petition, go to save-student-aid.
