January 25, 2011

PELLA — Central students will present the Vagina Monologues Friday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in Kruidenier Center. Tickets are $5 general admission, $3 students and senior citizens and $1 with a Central ID.

VDAY logoThe V-Day campaign is a global activist movement to stop violence to women and girls. It generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex slavery.

All proceeds from the performance will benefit the Crisis Intervention Services of Marion County.

“We chose to work with the shelter because V-Day isn’t just about education, it’s about taking action,” said the director, Melissa Dunlap, a senior business management major from Zearing, Iowa. “We wanted to do more than just raise awareness.”

In addition to raising money, Dunlap has also organized a supplies drive to garner participation from many campus groups. So far, participants include: Alpha Delta Epsilon, Alpha Psi Omega, baseball team, Club Associated with Athletic Training, the dance team, Organize the Hope, peer educators, Psi Sigma Tau, Student Senate, men’s and women’s track teams, women’s golf team, wrestling team and Zeta Upsilon. Items ranging from toiletries to blankets and diapers have been donated.

The performance will also guest star faculty members Jaclyn Rundle, associate professor of business management; Maria Carla Chiarella, associate professor of psychology; Amy Gates-Young, assistant professor of German; and Wendy Weber, associate professor of mathematics.
