Central College has launched a reimagined Honors Program that provides academically high-achieving students with expanded opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, research and creative scholarship.
Honors students will take specially designed courses taught by Central faculty, complete a two-semester research or creative project with faculty mentorship and present their work. Many students also have opportunities to present at regional and national conferences. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to participate, and those who complete the program earn an Honors designation on their transcript.
Students with a 3.75 high school grade point average are invited to enroll in a designated first-semester seminar, while current Central students with a cumulative 3.5 GPA are eligible to join the program.
“We’re so excited to relaunch the Honors Program at Central that provides a community for students who are interested in research and creative pursuits, have strong career aspirations and want more out of their education,” says Valerie Billing, associate professor of English and faculty director of the Honors Program.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences to work collaboratively with faculty on innovative projects,” says Mary E.M. Strey, vice president for academic affairs. “Dr. Billing and other Central faculty members have re-energized the Honors Program to provide access and exploration for more students who have the curiosity to explore topics outside those in our traditional courses.”
The reimagined Honors Program reflects Central’s commitment to providing personalized, high-impact educational experiences that prepare students for graduate study, professional success and lifelong learning.
