Central College’s Stavros Papakonstantinidis, associate professor of communication studies, published a new study examining how faculty perceive the integration of artificial intelligence in higher education. The research analyzes how factors such as teaching experience, institutional context and disciplinary specialization shape faculty attitudes toward AI.

The co-authored article, titled “AI and Higher Education: Understanding Faculty Roles in Teaching, Research and Administration,” draws on a quantitative survey to explore how faculty across institutions and academic fields engage with AI. The study also highlights how demographic variables influence patterns of adoption. The article was published in Contemporary Education Technology, a Q1 ranked journal.

As AI continues to advance rapidly, its impact on higher education is becoming increasingly significant. The technology is reshaping teaching practices, administrative processes and faculty interaction with digital tools. While AI offers opportunities to enhance learning and streamline operations, its use also raises complex questions. The study’s findings offer guidance for academic leaders and policymakers seeking to create AI-inclusive environments that reflect faculty needs, uphold ethical standards and support strong learning outcomes.

Papakonstantinidis joined Central’s communication studies department in 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a Master of Science from Ithaca College and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom.
