The Mathematical Association of America awarded Russ Goodman, Central College professor of mathematics, the Crawford Distinguished Teaching Award in the Iowa Section.

Goodman joined Central’s mathematics program in 2002. He recently served as an officer-at-large on the MAA Board of Directors and as a member of MAA Congress. At Central, he has hosted a sports analytics conference for nine years while also publishing papers. He previously received Central’s Frank W. Moore Faculty Award for promoting student learning and the Dr. John Wesselink Award for Outstanding Performance in Institutional Service.

In addition to his academic work, Goodman serves as the assistant coach for goalkeepers for Central’s women’s soccer team. His passion for sports intertwines with his empathy for students and love for mathematics, inspiring young scholars to ask questions, push themselves and learn more.

Goodman earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of Texas at Arlington and his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.

Each year, MAA honors outstanding undergraduate educators from each of its 29 sections. The award is named for Carol Crawford, US Naval Academy, whose generous bequest supports this recognition.
