Central College’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform the world premiere of a new musical work honoring Ahmir Jolliff and Dan Marburger, a 1989 Central graduate. The work entitled “A Mere Moment — Bolero in Remembrance” by Michele Fernández, will be performed at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Perry Performing Arts Center.

“Principal Dan Marburger was a Central alum, so the planning committee thought it fitting that our ensemble be a part of the event,” says Brad Lampe, lecturer of music and director of bands. “The Iowa Bandmasters Association donors and supporters made this incredible project possible. My students and I are truly honored to take part in this meaningful event, celebrating the spirit and unity of the Perry community. This is more than just a performance — it’s a moment of connection, pride and shared passion for music!”

The performance will feature the Perry High School Band, under the direction of Lisa Christensen and Blaine Schmidt, in collaboration with Lampe. Stan Dahl, senior lecturer of music and director of the Flying Pans Steel Drum Ensemble, is assisting with the performance. Each ensemble will also perform other pieces during the concert.

According to the Perry Performing Arts Center website, the project was initiated to honor the resilience of the Perry community following the tragic events of Jan. 4, 2024, when Jolliff, a student, and Marburger, the principal, lost their lives. The composition serves as a tribute to their memories, and as a gesture of support and healing from the Iowa instrumental music community.

This event is free and open to the public at Perry Performing Arts Center, 1200 18th St., Perry, Iowa.
