The Central RED Society will present a two-part presentation about the Meriwether Lewis and William Clark expedition. Jim Gilbert, a retired educator, will examine the voyage in a presentation called Lewis & Clark, The Great Expedition on Thursday, April 4, and Thursday, April 11.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the Dave ’61 and Ardie Sutphen ’64 Common Room, Central’s Graham Annex. The cost is $15 each day. The program will begin at 6 p.m.

The Core of Discovery expedition, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, would lay claim to the vast, unexplored region of the Louisiana Territory, which the United States was able to acquire. Members of the expedition became the first American settlers to experience a never-before-seen wilderness and all its resources and make contact with the native people who had already inhabited this new world.

Gilbert is an educator who recently retired from a 34-year career in public education. He has served as a teacher, coach and elementary school principal in four districts in central Iowa. Gilbert also served as a coach and instructor at Grinnell College for six years. He is a graduate of Grinnell College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies and received the Iowa Teaching License. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa and the Iowa Administrator’s Licensure from Drake University.
