Kate Nesbit, Central College assistant professor of English, co-authored a chapter in the newly released book, “Writing the Classroom: Pedagogical Documents as Rhetorical Genres.”

“Writing the Classroom” explores how faculty compose and use pedagogical documents to establish classroom expectations and teaching practices. The chapter, titled “Toward the Learning to Teach Statement,” considers the pitfalls and problems with traditional statements of teaching philosophy. Nesbit proposes instead a more mutable approach to the genre, one that highlights the continuous process of evolution inherent to a teacher’s pedagogical identity. Nesbit wrote the chapter with Megan Knight, associate professor of instruction, University of Iowa.

Nesbit joined the English department at Central in 2019. She teaches courses in 19th- and 20th-century British and world literature, as well as sound and media studies.
