Central College’s music program will wrap up the Spring semester with five concerts in April and two concerts in May.
ALMA will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, in Cox-Snow Music Center. The concert will be directed by Gabriel Espinosa, associate professor of music and a 1979 Central graduate.
Central will host the Percussion Extravaganza with performances by Percussion Ensemble, Flying Pans Steel Band and Dutch Boom. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The concert will be directed by Stan Dahl, senior lecturer of music. The performance also will be livestreamed.
The College Community Orchestra Concert is at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 24, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The concert will be directed by Eileen McGonigal, assistant professor of music/director of bands. The ensemble will be joined by the Chamber Singers and Espinosa’s jazz quartet for the world premiere of his composition “Amelia.” The piece was written in honor of Espinosa’s niece, Cecilia. At week 27 of her pregnancy, Cecilia lost her daughter, who was to be named Amelia. A video sharing the story will be played prior to the piece. In addition, the performance will be livestreamed.
The Jazz Band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Cox-Snow Music Center. The concert will be directed by Espinosa.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The concert will be directed by McGonigal. The performance also will be livestreamed.
The A Cappella Choir Pre-Tour Concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The concert features the A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers and will be directed by Mark Babcock, professor of music, M. Joan Kuyper Farver Endowed Chair in Music and a 1991 Central graduate. The performance will be livestreamed.
ALMA will also perform at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the Tulip Toren prior to the evening Tulip Time parade.
