Ally Krogstad, professor of Spanish at Central College, will present “Pobreza y privilegio en Latinoamérica (Poverty and Privilege in Latin America)” from 7-8 p.m. Monday, April 11, in the Boat/Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center.
The presentation is part of the 2021-22 Central Faculty Lecture Series with a focus on responsible citizenship. The event is free and open to the public. The presentation also will be livestreamed on the Central Dutch Network at centraldutchnetwork.com.
Krogstad will examine the situations of individuals who have attempted to change the culture of exclusion seen in many countries. She’ll also discuss the history of economic and social inequality in Latin America. Within the historical context of poverty and privilege in Latin America, this lecture also will celebrate the work of those from Guatemala who, for the benefit of their communities, are striving to overcome the effects of a colonial past.
Krogstad earned a B.A. from North Central College, an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Krogstad’s areas of expertise include Latin American studies, indigenous studies, Latin American literature, colonial studies, creative writing and service learning. She joined Central’s faculty in 1999.
