Daniel Vos, lecturer of religious studies at Central College, will present “Love as Responsible Citizenship in Deuteronomy” from 7-8 p.m. Monday, March 21, in the Boat/Moore rooms of Maytag Student Center.

The presentation is part of the 2021-22 Central Lecture Series with a focus on responsible citizenship. The event is free and open to the public and will be broadcast live on the Central Dutch Network.

Vos intends to discuss the term love in Deuteronomy 6’s famous call for its hearers to “love the Lord with heart, soul, and strength.” According to Vos, love connotes choices that will favor or benefit the recipient of that love. This biblical call for love of God and neighbor requires not merely warm feelings toward those around us, but direct action that will benefit others.  For contemporary faith communities, love for the other is necessarily at the core of responsible citizenship.

Vos earned his B.A. from Dordt College, M.Div. and Th.M. in Old Testament from Calvin Theological Seminary, and Ph.D. in biblical studies from Boston College; his doctoral studies were focused on law and metaphor in the Hebrew Bible. He joined Central’s faculty in 2021.
