Central Music Ensembles Set for October Performances

Central’s music program will showcase nine concerts in October.

Performances will begin with a Homecoming concert featuring ALMA at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The performance will be directed by Gabriel Espinosa, a 1979 Central graduate and associate professor of music.

The college will wrap up Homecoming concerts Sunday, Oct. 3, with performances by the Flying Pans Alumni Steel Band at 1 p.m. and Symphonic Wind Ensemble at 2:15 p.m. Flying Pans will be directed by Stan Dahl, senior lecturer of music, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will be directed by Eileen McGonigal, assistant professor of music. Both concerts will be performed on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium.

Festival Choir, A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers will perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, on Hoesktra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The performance will conclude 8th and 9th Grade Singfest, an all-day workshop hosted by Central’s music department. Mark Babcock, a 1991 Central graduate, professor of music and M. Joan Kuyper Farver Endowed Chair in Music, will direct the performance.

Festival Honor Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. The performance will conclude 7th and 8th Grade Bandfest, an all-day workshop hosted by Central’s music department. McGonigal will direct the performance.

Espinosa will direct an ALMA concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, in Cox-Snow Music Center. Tickets are $5 and free for Central students.

Artist and Midwest singer-songwriter Chad Elliott will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Mills Gallery. His exhibit “Wilderman’s” also will be featured in the Mills Gallery. Elliott blends folk roots, swampy blues and soulful writing to deliver an original Americana sound. He has penned more than 1,500 songs in his career while also cultivating his skills as a painter, sculptor, illustrator and author.

Performances will conclude for the month with the Flying Pans Fall Show “PAN RAMACAJ” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, on Hoekstra Family Stage in Douwstra Auditorium. Both performances will be directed by Dahl. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and children and free for Central students.

Masks are strongly encouraged and will be provided at the door for each concert. All performances are free unless otherwise noted.
