Central College will feature the work of artists Lee Emma Running and Andrew Kaufman from Nov. 20 through Dec. 13 in the Mills Gallery in the Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts. The title of the exhibit is “Time and Place,” ideas featured prominently in both artists’ work.

Running’s work, as described in her artist biography, “embraces the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Guided by simple material investigations, her sculptures, installations and drawings are deeply connected to place.”

Kaufman describes his work as “a direct reflection of my own observations and experience within society. Collecting these, I translate them into contemplative visual and experimental art.”

Both artists do conceptually driven and experimental work, selecting media that helps convey feelings and ideas. The work in the exhibit includes non-traditional materials like vinyl graphics and digital imagery.

“The works of these artists are distinct but pair well together,” says Joe Hoksbergen, director of the Mills Gallery. “The complex patterns and shapes in both Kaufman and Lee’s artwork compel the viewer to stay and get lost in the work. Though abstract, there is a lot of fine craftsmanship and care that goes into these pieces.”

Both artists work at Grinnell College. Running is professor and chair of the studio art department; Kaufman serves as the department chair of art and art history.

The public is invited to an artist talk and reception in the gallery at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2. The Mills Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
