As of January 2020, all Central College sophomores are invited to participate in Central’s new Career Kickstarter — a free, one-week program offered during winter break that offers guaranteed micro-internship opportunities, plus the opportunity to explore potential career paths.

All students participating in the program will be paired with an alumni mentor or other local professional and engage with a local organization. Participants will do in-depth career exploration and planning and experience workshops on such topics as networking, resumé preparation, the use of professional social media, how to apply and prepare for an extended internship and more.

“Employers are engaging with students earlier and earlier in their college career and want to see workplace experience on their resume,” says Jessica Klyn de Novelo, Central’s director of career and professional development and a 2005 graduate. “And Central has a large and enthusiastic local alumni base that’s eager to provide such experiences. I see it as a natural way for students to make connections off-campus and gain professional experience early in their time at Central.”

The workshop experiences, she said, will help students explore various career interests and equip them with the knowledge they need to pursue longer-term internships as they advance through their time at Central.
