Tariffs will be the focus of the Central RED Society presentation at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28.
Central College Political Science Professor Andrew Green will interview Daryl Bouwkamp, senior director, International Business Development and Government Affairs for Vermeer Corporation and vice chair of Vermeer China Ltd.
The presentation, “Let’s Talk Tariffs,” will be in the Dave and Ardie Sutphen Common Room on the Graham Annex on Central’s campus in Pella, Iowa. Cost is $15 and includes dinner. A cash bar will also be available.
A tariff is a tax on imports or exports. Tariffs are used by governments to generate revenue or to protect domestic industries from competition. For some companies such as Vermeer, international trade has become increasingly important. Vermeer depends on exports for about 30 percent of its revenue, encompassing hundreds of millions of dollars across 80 countries. The interview will explore the impact steel and aluminum tariffs may have locally.
Participants must be a member of the Central RED (“Ready to Engage and Discover”) Society to attend. A Central RED membership costs $25 per year. To become a member, contact Mary Benedict at benedictm@central.edu or 641-628-7641. No affiliation with Central is required to join.
