One of Central College’s newest faculty members, Amanda Clark is lecturer of education and helping Central’s elementary education majors become excellent teachers. She completed her bachelor’s degree from Simpson College and master’s degree from Drake University, where she’s also now completing her Ph.D. Read on to learn more about her:

What’s your favorite thing about teaching?

As an elementary teacher, my favorite part was pulling students in to read aloud. The “edge-of-your-seat” moments fueled their love of reading and learning. As a college professor, my favorite part so far is seeing students engage in rich conversations. Their passion for doing what is best for kids, combined with their academic learning and prior life experiences make for great conversations.

What should students know about you?

I have very high expectations. Your future is in your hands as a classroom teacher. However, I am also a realist when it comes to homework. As a student myself (working on my doctorate at Drake), I know time is precious. With only 24 hours in the day, I want students to know that my assignments are meaningful and worthwhile, or I wouldn’t assign them.

How did you get interested in your field?

I am the stereotypical elementary school teacher. I love children and watching them interact and learn. When my brothers got tired of playing school, I taught my stuffed animals. A part of me has also always wanted to be a college professor. The thrill of studying something you are passionate about, surrounded by individuals with similar ideas and supported by professors who are deeply invested in the students and program, is exciting!

What are your favorite books?

I have four totes of children’s books, and depending on the day and the lesson, they are all my favorite. One of my top five books is “Hey, Little Ant.” The line that makes it my favorite is one I use to set up classroom expectations with my students. “If you were me and I were you, what would you want me to do?”

Tell us one unexpected thing about yourself.

The Clark family settled Clarksville, Iowa, where I grew up, so I have a town named after my family. Many members of my family still live there.

At Central College, students are mentored by experts, and not a single class is led by a teaching assistant. Read more news about Central faculty.
