Featured: Roundtable Held on Immigration Issues

February 16, 2017

Today Central College President Mark Putnam held a roundtable discussion on campus regarding emerging national and state policies related to international, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and undocumented students in the United States. Faculty, staff and students were invited to join the discussion to share their viewpoints and ask questions related to these topics.

To begin the discussion, Putnam referenced Central’s Welcome Statement, which details the college’s commitment to being a safe environment for all persons and an inclusive academic community. Putnam called the Welcome Statement “a great reminder of what we value and who we are.”

Some of the issues raised at the roundtable included the responses of colleges around the country, a college’s legal obligations related to immigration enforcement, concerns for students and faculty traveling abroad, how colleges can have a voice in discussions of immigration and how student leaders can continue this conversation on campus.

Putnam said conversations related to these topics will be ongoing as the college monitors unfolding legislation.
