Central College honors the 100th anniversary of its relationship with the Reformed Church in America this year, with a special celebration Sept. 30 during Homecoming’s Heritage Day. The celebration begins with a 10 a.m. reception in Central’s Chapel courtyard, followed by a worship service in the Chapel at 11 a.m.

In 1916, Central College was nearly lost — but saved when the Reformed Church in America (RCA) purchased the college from the Baptist Convention of Iowa. This founding group had shifted its focus to Des Moines College, which closed in 1929.

Central continues to value its long-standing relationship with the RCA. The affiliation connects students to missions and internship opportunities, and many RCA members contribute to Central’s future as part of the board of trustees. Reformed churches across the country support students through the Journey Scholarship Fund. RCA students can also receive the Heritage Award. Meanwhile, hundreds of Central graduates serve as leaders in RCA congregations, also supporting Central’s students and mission in their turn.

“Colleges that have been in existence as long as Central College endure because their roots run deep,” says Central College President Mark Putnam. “The ecumenical and inclusive spirit that defines our past is also the pathway to our future.”

Rev. Tony Campbell, Associate General Secretary and the Director of Mission Engagement of the Reformed Church in America, will deliver the morning message at this year’s Heritage Day worship service. At the Heritage Day luncheon, Rev. Dr. Nathan Busker ‘89, pastor of Ponds Reformed Church in Oakland, N.J., will deliver a keynote address. Rev. Marjorie Postma Vander Wagen, member of the 50-year reunion class of 1966, will provide an invocation.
