Summer Days at Central

Featured: Summer Days at Central

July 22, 2016

What’s happening at Central during the academic off-season? We’ve got students as far as 5,000 miles away, but we’ll never let things get dull around the pond. Want to read what you’re missing?

The Place to Be

We’re breaking records for events on campus this summer. Upward Bound celebrated its 50th anniversary, and a first-time Fun with Food camp welcomed 9- to 11-year-olds to the Central College garden and kitchen.

Between May and August, Central will also have hosted four weddings, 19 receptions, five reunions and three rehearsal dinners — besides many other camps, conferences and visiting students.

Team Up with Professors

It’s a Central trademark — graduate-level research opportunities for ambitious undergraduate students. Our 2016 researchers earned funding to study bats, bees, refugees, Central Teacher Academy and more with Central professors. Plus, they’re enjoying life together on campus — and perks like cooking from the Central College garden.

Not to mention, 54 more students — from eight states — have been living at Central while completing summer internships. They’re working for Vermeer, Pella, Cargill, and Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Catching Them All

Pokémon made a comeback this summer, and Central’s campus is a hot spot for the game. Pokémon Go draws players morning, noon and night to catch Pokémon with their smartphones, battle at a “gym” on Peace Mall and set lures near the pond.

Take a Seat

Central College Garden has new outdoor furniture, thanks to a $1,904 grant from the Iowa Grocery Industry Association. Our benches, table and umbrella base were made from recycled plastic bags by Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls — each bench represents approximately 10,600 recycled bags.

The Wild Life

After a successful goose chase this spring, our favorite migrating family is spending their summer at a pond north of Pella. Meanwhile, our pond has teemed with other multiplying families — from our prolific goldfish and koi to thousands of tadpoles! And let’s not forget about the friendly squirrels — yep, they’re still here.

Students, guests and thousands of critters keep things interesting around Central pond.

See You Soon

It’s a great summer for Central — but campus could never be so busy we’d forget to look forward to the return of our students! Classes start August 24, and we can’t wait. It’s going to be a great year.
