Central College board of trustees has announced five new members: Jason Andringa, Roger Brown, Mike Main ’87, Jana Rieker ’94 and Markay Winston ’87. Their terms begin July 1.
The board also honored three retiring members. Vern Den Herder ’71, farmer and retired Miami Dolphins defensive end, has served 1987-92 and 2004-16. Bob Vermeer ’66, chair emeritus of Vermeer Corporation, has served since 1988. Stan Poortinga, retired CEO and chairman of the board of Precision Pulley & Idler, has served since 2001.
Board members provide vision for Central’s future and meet on campus twice each year. “The enduring strength and confidence at Central College is firmly rooted in its board of trustees,” said Central College President Mark Putnam. “We benefit from an immensely talented board. This group of new trustees cares deeply about the future of the college and Central’s commitment to providing a first-rate liberal arts education.”
Jason Andringa, president and CEO, Vermeer Corporation
Before joining Vermeer in 2005, Jason was a staff engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Andringa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Calvin College and later completed a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California. Andringa and his wife, Carrie, live in Pella with their three children.
Roger Brown, president and CEO, Precision, Inc.
Brown has led at Precision, Inc. (PPI), since 2000 as controller, vice president of finance and vice president of operations. He has also held various financial positions at Macklanburg-Duncan Co., Newell Co. (now Newell Rubbermaid), Limited Stores Inc. and Price Waterhouse. Brown studied accounting at Xavier University and is a Certified Public Accountant. Brown and his wife, Janice, life in Pella and have two adult children.
Mike Main ’87, professor of medicine, medical director
After graduating from Central in 1987, Mike Main completed an M.D. degree from the University of Iowa College Of Medicine and post-graduate training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and the Cleveland Clinic. Main is now professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and medical director of the Cardiovascular Ultrasound Imaging Laboratory at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.
Jana Rieker ’94, public relations and communications director, Trilix
Before joining Des Moines marketing firm Trilix, Jana Rieker served as vice president and director of sales and marketing at Bankers Trust, director of marketing at Bratney Companies in Boise, Idaho, and Des Moines, marketing sales manager at Meredith Corporation and advertising sales representative for The Des Moines Register and WHO Radio. Rieker earned her Master of Business Administration from the University of Iowa and continues her passion for education by serving as adjunct public relations professor, kickboxing instructor for the YMCA and professional speaker in public relations and women’s leadership. Rieker lives in Clive with her husband, Mike, and their son and daughter.
Markay Winston ‘87, educational and organizational consultant and administrator
Dr. Markay L. Winston has gained expertise in urban education, academic reform, leadership development and more for 25 years. Before starting her own consulting firm, Winston served as chief diverse learner officer for Chicago Public Schools, the third largest district in the country. Winston also served as director of student services for Cincinnati Public Schools and has practiced as a school psychologist. After graduating from Central in 1987, Winston completed her master’s and doctorate in school psychology and counseling at the University of Cincinnati, as well as a superintendent’s license from Xavier University.
