For nearly a third of Central students, graduate school is their next step after college. Some recent graduates look back on what helped them succeed in grad school, and how their liberal arts background prepared them for the future. Overall, 93 percent of Central students are accepted into their first- or second-choice graduate school.

“I had the opportunity to do research at Central, which helped me get an internship and made me a stronger candidate for grad school. These research experiences helped me gain skills that have been essential during my master’s work.
Because of my liberal arts education at Central, I am able to understand my major from a variety of disciplines, which has been a huge advantage in grad school. My biology degree from Central is not just a science education, it’s science through the lens of history, political science, literature, human health and more.”

“Having a liberal arts background, I feel like my education is more well-rounded than some of the other students who have a narrower focus. It is much easier for me to communicate both orally and in writing. Taking writing-intensive classes and giving presentations with immediate feedback from classmates and direct feedback from professors rather than a teaching assistant was a huge advantage of Central.”

Grant earned his master’s in accounting at a large public university. “Central’s accounting curriculum required us to take more accounting courses than at a public university. My graduate classes covered topics that I had already learned at Central.
My professors at Central helped guide me through the process of selecting a grad school and helped me through the admissions process. The great thing about Central that I took for granted was that professors’ purpose for being there is to teach you and prepare you for success.”
