Zach Wahls speaks on campus about same-sex marriage

On Monday, Dec. 3, Zach Wahls, a same-sex marriage advocate, will be on campus. The event is sponsored by Central College One Iowa, the Office for Student Involvement and the Intercultural Life Office.

On January 31, 2011, Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public forum regarding full marriage equality. The son of a same-sex couple, he proclaimed to the committee, “The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.”

Unknown to Wahls, his speech was posted to YouTube and went viral. It has over 2.5 million views. Since that time, he has been interviewed on MSNBC, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “Chelsea Lately” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” He recently spoke at the Democratic National Convention. Wahls has published a book titled “My Two Moms.”

A reception will be held in the Cox-Snow lobby at 5:30 p.m. Following the reception, Wahls will speak in the Cox-Snow recital hall at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
