PELLA — Central College’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) and the College-Community Band will perform together for Central’s Sunday Concert Series May 1 at 4 p.m. in Douwstra Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Dick Redman, director of bands at Pella Community School District, is guest conductor for selections from The Music Man. Redman, a Central College alumnus, received a Master of Arts in music education from Truman State University. He directs the Pella Municipal Band, the Central Iowa Color Guard Camp and is a member of the Pella Opera House programming committee and the Pella Tulip Time steering committee. In 2010, he was inducted into the Iowa Jazz Educators Hall of Fame.
SWE will perform several pieces including selections from “The Danserye” by Tielman Susato and “St. Lawrence Suite” by Samuel Barber with soloists Justin Von Ahsen and Chrystal Belz on trumpet.
The College-Community Band will perform four selections including “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein. Also performing will be the Chamber Winds.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble and College-Community Band is under the direction of Mitchell Lutch, director of bands and assistant professor of music. SWE is a select instrumental ensemble featuring over 30 performers. The College-Community Band is comprised of 25 community members, students and Central employees.
