New honor society chapter opened at Central College

Central College recently established its first mathematics honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME), with 12 students and two faculty as charter members. KME National Treasurer Cynthia Huffman, a professor at Pittsburg State University, traveled to Pella to induct the Central members.

According to faculty adviser Russ Goodman, an associate professor of mathematics, the installation of a Central KME chapter raises the profile of the mathematics program to a national level. Students need not major in mathematics to participate, but Goodman said the chapter offers an honorary organization for those who excel in mathematics and related fields.

Founded in 1931, KME currently has over 80,000 members in 35 states. The society name translates, “Develop an appreciation for the beauty in mathematics.” Since its inception, the organization has sought to fulfill this motto and promote interest in mathematics among undergraduate students.

Central’s charter KME members include Goodman, professor of mathematics Wendy Weber and Central students Ashley Cliff, Shannon Coulson, Josh Forst, Brian Hadley, Ashley Hulsing, Kayla Johnson, Tim Kahl, Melissa Ketcham, Kathy Manternach, Megan Miller, Hayley Noll and Katie Todd.
