PELLA — Central College’s 32st annual Jazzmania is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, at Cox-Snow Recital Hall and Douwstra Auditorium. Jazzmania XXXII’s evening concert will be held in Douwstra Auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m. with performances by Central’s Jazz Band featuring special guest artists Hendrik Muerkens and Misha Tsiganov. Tickets for the evening concert are $5. Tickets are available online at www.central.edu/finearts or by calling 641-628-9000. Muerkens is a composer and a chromatic harmonica and vibraphone player who is originally from Germany. He is hailed as the most important jazz harmonica player of our time. Meurkens’ recordings and performances have gained worldwide acclaim because his music has universal appeal. Muerkens has also backed such leading artists as Astrid Gilberto and Olivia Newton John. Tsiganov is a jazz piano player originally from St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1990, Tsiganov received prize-winner-diploma of the All-Russian Jazz Competition. Tsiganov can be heard weekly as the featured pianist on the Bill Cosby cartoon “Little Bill” on Nickelodeon. In addition to the evening concert, high school and middle school jazz bands will compete throughout the day from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Day passes are $3 and are available at the door. High schools competing include Central Lee, Des Moines Christian, Knoxville, Moravia, North Mahaska, Oskaloosa I and II, Washington and Waukee. Middle school bands competing are Des Moines Christian, Oskaloosa, Pella seventh grade and Pella eighth grade.
