Glassblowing artist Ed Schmid displays work in Mills Gallery

Master Glassblower Ed Schmid will be in residence at Central College March 24-28. His glass artwork will be displayed in the Mills Gallery on campus beginning March 27 through April 19.

Schmid has been working with molten glass since 1984. He has written two best-selling books on the art of glassblowing: “Beginning Glassblowing” and “Advanced Glassblowing Techniques.” Schmid teaches at his studio in Bellingham, Wash., as well as giving classes and workshops around the world. His work can be found in museums and major collections nationally and internationally.

While the Allison B. Allen artist-in-residence at Central, Schmid will demonstrate his glassblowing techniques to students. Central’s glassblowing studio in Lubbers Center for Visual Arts was recently renovated with new state-of-the-art equipment. Central offers one of only two glassblowing programs in Iowa—and was the first in the state of offer such classes.

Schmid will also give an artist talk, followed by a reception, on March 27 at 5 p.m. in the Mills Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.
